Acupuncture is an ancient technique used for the prevention and treatment of medical problems. It involves the insertion of tiny, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Its effectiveness has been evidenced by its use in the treatment of many serious diseases for thousands of years in China and by modern clinical research.Since the early 1970’s there has been a rapid growth in the awareness and use of Chinese Medicine in Western countries. Many colleges offer Master’s degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the acupuncture profession is licensed in most states (in California, a license to practice acupuncture is required). In 1993, the Food and Drug Administration estimated that Americans made up to 12 million visits per year to acupuncture practitioners and spent upwards of half a billion dollars on acupuncture treatments. Recent clinical research supports the efficacy of acupuncture for a variety of conditions including infertility, chronic pain, and auto immune disorders among others and, as a result, many insurance providers now cover acupuncture as part of their plans.

While each person experiences acupuncture differently, most people feel only a minimal amount of sensation as the needles are inserted. Once the needles are in, most patients experience a feeling of relaxation and well-being that lasts for many hours after the treatment. Typically, a series of acupuncture treatments is recommended to achieve long-term benefits though most patients report an improvement in their condition after only one or two treatments.

Chinese Medicine is a 3,500-year-old-system of medicine that can be used to address a variety of ailments from minor imbalances to chronic conditions. It is based on the belief that the human body is in a dynamic state of balance both internally and with the outside world. If this equilibrium is disturbed then we can become sick.

Our body’s balance can be upset by emotions such as anger, sadness or grief or by the food we eat or the environment we live in. Some of us are born with a weak constitution and many of us overwork and become depleted. All these factors can cause minor imbalances, which, if left untreated, can become more serious pathologies.

The goal of Chinese Medicine is to achieve physical, mental and spiritual balance. At Rancho Bernardo Acupuncture, your practitioner will use nutritional advice, acupuncture, Chinese herbs and massage to help you achieve this.

An herbal formula will likely be a part of your treatment. Chinese herbs differ from western herbs in that they are almost always prescribed as a formula. Combining different types of herbs in different quantities helps us to craft a formula to address your specific symptom pattern. Our herbs are pre-packaged and offered in a pill form.

We are pleased to offer a variety of massage techniques under the guidance of our licensed Massage Therapist. Whether it’s relaxation you’re seeking or there’s a specific area of pain or discomfort that requires treatment, the benefits of massage are endless and often an important component of healing.
