What is Acupuncture?

Several thousand years ago, East-Asian practitioners discovered that the body forms disharmonies as a result of a person's constitutional tendencies.  These disharmonies may also be caused by other factors, such as a person's lifestyle and the various physical and psychological stresses of life.  Oriental medical theory explains these disharmonies as an imbalance of opposing forces called yin and yang.  This imbalance disrupts the movement of the body's vital energy (qi) along the meridian pathways, which are channels through which the body's energy is thought to flow.  Acupuncture restores the smooth flow of qi throughout the body. By inserting and manipulating hair-thin needles at specific points, the acupuncturist is able to return the patient's body to its natural state of balance and thereby activate and promote the body's innate ability to heal itself and regulate itself.

Modern medical research has shown that acupuncture produces a powerful anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant effect, which is why it is used so frequently and effectively to treat chronic or acute pain.  This anti-inflammatory effect makes acupuncture well-suited to treat many other medical conditions as well.

Acupuncture returns the body to its
natural state of balance and harmony.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is used by millions of Americans every year. Acupuncturists in California are required to complete an extensive four-year graduate program, including  an in-depth study of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology; training in Clean Needle Technique; and, of course, training in acupuncture techniques and traditional herbal medicine. I have passed comprehensive national board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and I am licensed by the state of California, which has one of the most rigorous and thorough licensing exams in the country. As required by law, I use pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety.
