What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Many first-time patients are concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like the hypodermic needles used for injections at doctors' offices.  They won't.  Acupuncture uses hair-thin, flexible needles that you will hardly feel when they are inserted.  When the needles are gently stimulated, you may experience a unique sensation that Oriental medicine calls de qi.  Patients often describe de qi as a heavy or dull sensation in the small, localized area where the needle has been inserted, but this sensation is not uncomfortable, it's just simply noticeable.  Most patients find these acupuncture sensations deeply satisfying and leave the treatment feeling relaxed both mentally and physically.

Acupuncture treatment creates deep relaxation
in both mind and body.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative, so more than one treatment is usually necessary.  The number of treatments needed to address a given medical problem depends on how serious the problem is, how severe the symptoms are and how long the problem has existed.  Generally speaking, short-term, acute problems take fewer treatments to resolve than long-term, chronic medical conditions.  Conditions with severe symptoms usually take longer to resolve than conditions with mild symptoms.  Some people will feel noticeable improvement after their very first treatment, others may not feel any relief until after three or four treatments, the process can vary quite a bit from one patient to the next.  Preventive treatments and treatments for general well-being may also be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
